St mary's cathedral
St. Mary’s Cathedral was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin, an esteemed English architect who drew inspiration from the ruins of Ardfert Cathedral. The slender triple lancets that grace the east and west walls are a clear reflection of this influence.
Although construction commenced in 1842, the work was hindered by a pause in funding and the Great Famine, resulting in several intermittent breaks. James Joseph McCarthy designed the interior decorations when work resumed in 1853, and two years later, the cathedral was fit for regular worship.
The spire and nave were completed separately in 1907 by Irish architects Ashlin and Coleman of Dublin, who also designed Cobh Cathedral.
