Visit Birr Castle Demesne

Birr Castle is an eminent and imposing fortress that has resided with pride in the core of Birr, County Offaly, Ireland for many years. Caisleán Bhiorra, as it is commonly referred to in the Irish language, stands as the notable domicile of the Earl of Rosse and is usually not accessible to the general public.

Nonetheless, individuals seeking a tranquil ambiance and recreational activities will find pleasure in the castle’s demesne gardens and magnificent grounds, which are openly accessible to all.

One of the most remarkable and exceptional attractions of the Birr Castle demesne is the science museum. The museum presents a fascinating and diverse range of exhibits that will cater to multiple interests, from the reflector telescope, the largest telescope for several decades to the ultra-modern radio telescope.

Furthermore, hungry guests can satiate themselves at the inviting café, where refreshing beverages and gourmet delicacies are in abundance. I extend a cordial invitation to explore the wonders of Birr Castle a place that will transport you to a realm of enchantment and fascination.

Birr Castle, which originated as a Norman structure in 1170, has undergone extensive transformations throughout its extensive history. These renovations were primarily carried out by the O’Carroll family and later by the Parsons family, who have continuously resided in the castle since the 1620s.

This legacy has lasted for over 400 years and has spanned 14 generations. During the months of May to September, tourists have the opportunity to partake in a guided castle tour, led by descendants of the Earl and his spouse.

The walls of the remarkable Victorian dining room are adorned with portraits of the Earl and his wife. The stunning view from the Gothic Saloon, which is an octagonal room, overlooks the River Camcor, where Birr Castle’s son once utilized the current to generate electricity for the estate.

Beautiful Castle gardens

Birr Castle is truly a wonderland that’s waiting to be explored. Award-winning gardens that have been carefully cultivated by generations of the Parsons family, through highs and lows, have resulted in rare trees and plants that are nothing short of outstanding.

Prepare for a breathtaking journey through 120 acres of trees and over 5,000 varieties of plants, and be prepared to be amazed by tranquil walks along rivers, waterfalls, and a peaceful lake. If you’re a lover of nature, you might just spot some unique wildlife like otters, herons, and kingfishers.

Take a moment to appreciate the stunning formal gardens, which were planted by Anne Countess of Rosse in 1936, and marvel at the world’s tallest box hedges. Don’t forget to take in the breathtaking views of the castle and the River Camcor from the Moat Walk, where the ancient well of St Brendan can also be found.

Take a stroll along the Red Tree Trail and be amazed by the 65 trees of distinction within Birr Castle Demesne. Allow yourself to be inspired by the love that has gone into creating this remarkable place.
